The International Associated Laboratory (LIA) Biodiversity and Evolution is a laboratory without walls created in 2014 and co-funded by CNRS (Centre national de la Recherche Scientifique) and FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) that formalizes the cooperation between three research units from France and Portugal, ISEM, CEFE and CIBIO-InBIO, to develop collaborative research on Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.

CIBIO partnered with the University of Montpellier and Porto Business School under the Horizon 2020 Teaming Programme to upgrade to a Centre of Excellence for Research, Development and Innovation in Basic and Environmental Biology, Ecosystem Monitoring and AgroBiodiversity. The project envisions to establish BIOPOLIS as one of the best international Centres of Excellence in Environmental Biology, Ecosystem Research and AgroBiodiversity, with the capacity for spreading excellence towards innovation, and thereby contributing to socioeconomic development at the regional and national levels.
